I love the TV Show “Shark Tank”. You know, the one where entrepreneurs and inventors hawk their ideas, products and businesses to the “Sharks”, those self-made millionaires who judge, advise, belittle and sometimes put their money behind the innovators. And whenever I watch the show, I am reminded of the original and continuing innovation of University Loft Company and ULoft’s student residence life furniture.
On a recent Shark Tank show, controversial millionaire owner of the Dallas Mavericks Mark Cuban made this statement: “First there’s (sic) the innovators. Then there’s the imitators. Then there’s the idiots.” Since the mid-1980s, University Loft Company has been an innovator, and, everyone else…well, you be the judge.
I mean, how many other college furniture manufacturers continually innovate and bring to market ideas like the Two-Position Chair, that lets you kick back safely while you study or schmooze in your dorm room? Or the Tool-less System that lets college students configure their dorm rooms to their needs by raising and lowering their student bunk beds?
Of course, all of these classic University Loft innovations owe their heritage to the original University Loft bed conceived by James Jannetides in his dorm room at Southern Illinois University, James didn’t just dream about maximizing space in the dorm room; he made it happen. Since James innovated the dorm room loft bed, others have been trying to catch up.
