When it comes to crafting furniture, University Loft makes certain that we use the strongest and most environmentally friendly materials. From the conception of the company back in the early 1980s until today, our conviction is to build furniture that not only serves the people who use it, but also serves the earth. Partnering with Friends of the Earth and using recycled materials when possible is one way we care for our natural world. Another way is to select wood that is kind to the ecosystem. University Loft’s furniture provides quality and strength using Environmentally Farmed Timber.
The beautiful wood that you see in our solid wood furniture products comes from the Hevea Brasiliensis tree. To give you an idea of how ideal this tree is for the environment and furniture, its growth period is quick. In just six years it has matured and can live up to 100 years. The trees produce latex throughout their lifecycle. When they come to the end of their life, they are cut down and then used for hardwood. The grain weaves through the wood with an attractive pattern. The wood’s strength has been tested to be greater than that of Northern Red Oak making it an effective choice for the furniture University Loft manufactures.
A good example of the Environmentally Farmed Timber we use can be seen in The Graduate Series.
Hevea Brasiliensis trees must grow in climates that are either tropical or subtropical with a minimum of about 4 feet of rainfall per year. Planting them at our warehouses would utterly fail because the frost would destroy their production.
University Loft will be celebrating Arbor Day on Friday, April 30, 2021 at our Tennessee and Indiana location. We’re planting trees!
