College libraries are wonderful institutions. Always have been and most likely always will be. But let’s face it: with today’s technology bringing instant information to college students everywhere, on campus and off, the traditional role of the library has been forced to change. Today, access to information and learning resources is as close as the student’s notebook or tablet computer. And those devices are as close as your dorm room’s University Loft student desk or bunk bed.
I remember back in the day when I would have to brave the elements – thunderstorms, windstorms, blizzards (yes, blizzards!) – to make it to the campus library about a mile from my residence hall. (Did I mention that I had to walk barefoot in the snow, uphill both ways?) I really had no choice. If I had a report to do or a presentation to plan, I had to go where the information was. I’m not complaining; I loved the library and still do. But it might have been nice to avoid risking life and limb by being able to study in my dorm room – if my dorm room had been outfitted with the solid wood student furniture from University Loft, that is. How great it would have been to cocoon in my dorm room atop my loft bed, book (or e-reader) in hand, or tilting back in my Two-Position Chair from University Loft while studying at my University Loft student desk.
Yeah, college students today have it great: information at their fingertips AND University Loft furniture in the dorm room. Lucky little learners!
