Word origins can be surprising. For example, the word “gymnasium” is apparently a latinization of a Greek term that can be interpreted as, “to train naked.” These days, of course, few gymnasiums resemble the ancient Greek Olympics, where participants competed in the nude. One word that was only a partial surprise when I looked up its origin, however, is the word “university.” While you might think “university” deals solely with education, it actually is said to derive from the Latin universitas magistrorum et scholarium, a “community of teachers and scholars.” Indeed, modern day campuses are all about “community” and this is a word that University Loft Company holds dear.
