There’s a restaurant nearby with outdoor seating. On beautiful spring or summer days, it’s tempting to enjoy a pleasant meal outside in a gentle breeze. Only one problem: the chairs are horribly uncomfortable. Whoever designed them must be an oddly misshapen human being; and whoever chose them for the restaurant surely did not sit in them for more than a few seconds. It makes me appreciate the ergonomics that go into our everyday environments. For example, college students live a more comfortable residence life if their universities use University Loft student furniture in the dorm room.
You see, University Loft furniture was originally conceived as a way to make dorm dwelling more comfortable. In creating that first loft bed at Southern Illinois University in the mid-1980s, James Jannetides was concerned with maximizing space and creating a more humanly comfortable on-campus living environment. There are certainly elements of ergonomics in that origin story for University Loft furniture.
Of course, Jannetides and University Loft didn’t stop there. All University Loft student furnishings are designed with usability and liveability in mind. Some examples include our Two-Position Chair which allows the student to rock back safely while studying. And that ULoft student desk can be equipped with a retractable mouse tray that can be pulled out for convenient and comfortable use when needed or pushed neatly out of the way when not in use.
Wherever we go and whatever student furniture we produce, University Loft always makes college residence life more liveable.
