Furniture is an important part of green purchasing. Yale requires any company participating in Yale's RFP process to have a sustainability program and agrees to comply with Yale's efforts to be sustainable. Yale has had some great successes in "greening" furniture purchasing. University Lofts - the company responsible for the new dorm furniture in 1900 new dorm rooms around campus for over 5 years. University Lofts has an incredible environmental commitment - making furniture out of Hevea Brasiliensis (sustainable harvested Rubberwood) from farms that are certified by the Malaysian Timber Council and by the Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) Management program, endorsed by the Forest Stewardship Council and by Friends of the World. This wood is not only a rapidly renewable resource, it has proven to be stronger than Northern Red Oak in independent tests, and it was also LESS EXPENSIVE than any other option for dorm furniture that Tony found.
